Originally published by Freemantle in 1900, Constable purchased the copyright and reissued this sumptuous version with revised, redrawn and recoloured illustrations. Crimson cloth with gilt decorations to spine and front cover. 40 exquisite tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissue guards. Red and grey pictorial endpapers. Top edge red. 325 pages. Title on front cover and spine is "Grimm's Fairy Tales". Spine is damaged - 3.5" split to edge of front cover at base, 1.5" to centre of spine at top. Spine also slightly faded. One plate (opposite page 28) is detached, one opposite page 90 is creased, all others present and mostly in fine condition. Tissue-guard for frontis is missing, a couple of others are loose with ragged edges. Foxing and some fingering to contents. A good copy of a scarce Rackham edition. Weight: 2020g.

Introduction by Edmond Gosse. 13 tales. 12 colour plates plus b/w illustrations. 122 pages. 8 x 6". Spine and corners bumped and slightly rubbed. Gilt to spine dulled. Endpapers browned. Peer Gynt is first and foremost a poetic fantasy, although based on a real person who lived Norway c1800. About his exploits, not much more is known than is found in Asbjornsen's book Norwegian Fairy Tales, in which Peer Gynt's chief exploits lie in the direction of fighting and conqueroring trolls. Admirably depicted by the "Goblin Master" in 12 colour plates plus b/w text illustrations. Brown cloth, gilt titles and vignette to front cover. Cream and brown pictorial endpapers. 255 pages.
