Alice was the first important and popular work to be submitted to a public process of re-illustration having come out of copyright in 1907. Rackham was the first artist to follow Tenniel and, in doing so, provoked much comment, most of it unfavourable. In anticipating such an attack, Heinemann, with clever advertising and editorship, ensured that Rackham's undeniably beautiful Alice attained a rate of sales which Rackham was never to achieve again. 13 superb colour plates plus 14 b/w drawings. Green cloth, black titles, gilt vignette to front cover. Green/white pictorial endpapers. 161 pages. Spine is split along front edge. Corners slightly bumped. Covers ever so slightly grubby with fading to rear spine edge and spine itself slightly darkened. Foxing throughout otherwise contents clean. Weight: 570g.

Spine and corners bumped and a little worn. A few light foxspots otherwise contents are very good. Plates are in excellent condition. This copy would make a wonderful gift. Weight: 840g.

Originally published by Freemantle in 1900, Constable purchased the copyright and reissued this sumptuous version with revised, redrawn and recoloured illustrations. Crimson cloth with gilt decorations to spine and front cover. 40 exquisite tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissue guards. Red and grey pictorial endpapers. Top edge red. 325 pages. Title on front cover and spine is "Grimm's Fairy Tales". Spine is damaged - 3.5" split to edge of front cover at base, 1.5" to centre of spine at top. Spine also slightly faded. One plate (opposite page 28) is detached, one opposite page 90 is creased, all others present and mostly in fine condition. Tissue-guard for frontis is missing, a couple of others are loose with ragged edges. Foxing and some fingering to contents. A good copy of a scarce Rackham edition. Weight: 2020g.

Inscription in black ink to verso of front endpaper has been neatly crossed through with blue ink, name in tiny writing to rear pastedown. 1.25" tear to bottom edge of frontis alongside spine. Some grubby fingermarks/marks to page margins and some very pale foxing. Contents generally clean. Weight: 706g.

Introduction by Edmond Gosse. 13 tales. 12 colour plates plus b/w illustrations. 122 pages. 8 x 6". Spine and corners bumped and slightly rubbed. Gilt to spine dulled. Endpapers browned.
