This is the "New Edition", a reprint of the first but with a new colour frontis and an additional 7 b/w drawings. 50 superb tipped-in colour plates distributed throughout the book. Numerous b/w drawings including some full-page. Green cloth, elaborate gilt decorations to front cover and spine. 126 pages. Large format, 11.25 x 8.5 inches. Light wear to top of spine, with a little fraying. Corners bumped. Fading to spine. A few marks to covers. Personal bookplate to front pastedown. Inscription to front free endpaper. Some page edge creasing, with a couple of small nicks. 3 tissue-guards are missing. Some light foxing throughout. Plates are still beautifully bright - overall a pleasing copy of this charming book. Weight: 1870g.

Peer Gynt is first and foremost a poetic fantasy, although based on a real person who lived Norway c1800. About his exploits, not much more is known than is found in Asbjornsen's book Norwegian Fairy Tales, in which Peer Gynt's chief exploits lie in the direction of fighting and conqueroring trolls. Admirably depicted by the "Goblin Master" in 12 colour plates plus b/w text illustrations. Brown cloth, gilt titles and vignette to front cover. Cream and brown pictorial endpapers. 255 pages. This is a stunning copy with no marks on the vellum other than a tiny rub to the edge of the rear cover and a small crack (0.5") at top and tail of the spine. The front endpaper has a 0.5" closed margin tear, there is a tiny gold gallery label to the rear pastedown, otherwise the contents are fine with all plates present and no foxing. This copy would make a wonderful gift. Weight: 1250g.

A rare Rackham title being published only in America. Spine just very slightly bumped. Pale stain to front cover which is hardly noticeable. Tiny bookseller's stamp to front pastedown. Inscription in pencil to front endpaper. Very light water stain to margins of pages in second half of book. Pages very lightly browned. First gathering pulled at hinges and slightly misaligned. Closed tear to gutter edges of first gathering. Prelims almost detached. Pictorial dustwrapper is slightly grubby with a few light stains, chipped at corners with a few small edge-tears. Difficult to find in good condition due to paper used being of poor quality, this is an exceptionally bright copy, rare in original wrapper. Weight: 420g.
