This Month - Collecting - contributed by Chris

What is a collection and what makes a collector collect?

One dictionary definition of collecting is "the act of gathering things together" and a collection is defined as "a set of objects collected for their interest, value, or beauty". The desire to collect seems to be something that is built into us, an intrinsic part of being human. We all collect something even though we may not view ourselves as collectors (Don't believe me? What about that collection of shoes in the cupboard, or suits in the wardrobe, or CDs in the rack?)

Featured Book - The Vege-Men's Revenge contributed by Rosemary

What a strange rhyming book this is!
Each page is delightfully illustrated by Bertha Upton's daughter, Florence K. Upton, best-known for the series of Golliwogg books. In 1897, having had two Golliwogg books published, the Uptons decided to try something different with The Vege-Men's Revenge.  Read more

I-Spy children's books make a comeback:
The 'I-Spy' books are set to return to new bookshop shelves more than half a century after they first became a family hit. The pocket-sized books, which were first available in 1948, were used to entertain millions of children on long car journeys throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Our pictures for this snowy month are a view of Hay-on-Wye's Clock tower taken from Rose's Books, and of the River Wye from near Stella Books. Click on either image to see a larger version.

Staff go the extra mile in the snow:
With Tintern and Hay-on-Wye getting approximately 20cm of snow, getting to work became a challenge. For some of our international customers 20cm of Snow and -9 degrees c is normal, but for us it's unusual. Therefore we have taken a few photos for you to enjoy .
