Welcome to the October 2019 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
It's been a stressful month due to high tides and copious amounts of rain. This has resulted in some very high river levels and the seemingly constant threat of flooding! The flood boards have been put to good use - thankfully the shop has stayed dry!

Butterflies of the night? But butterflies don’t fly at night I hear you say. True, they do not, but in France the moth is aptly named Papillon De Nuit - Butterfly Of The Night. Having said that butterflies don’t fly at night, there are one or two exceptions and although we think of moths as night-time creatures there are in fact many day flying moths which we may mistake for butterflies. I love maps and this book intrigued me as soon as I saw the title. It covers the greatest cartographic phantoms covering everything from ghost islands to ship snatching beasts and uncovers the fascinating stories behind their invention. The world is depicted, not as it ever existed, but as it was thought to be along with beautiful and enthralling images to illustrate. These are the most bizarre tales from the chronicles of exploration, compelling naratives of murderous polar explorers, deranged buccaneers and a whole host of other curious characters. |
