February 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the February 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

This month seems to have revolved around the bad weather and storms we've been experiencing. Thankfully we've survived unscathed! These have been coupled with some recent high tides (never a good combination) but thankfully the water stayed out of the shop! See the photo at the bottom of this newsletter showing the water covering the road outside the shop and surrounding our new sign.

February also sees us hold our Annual Business Meeting - a chance for the staff to all get together, eat donuts and discuss what went well last year, what didn't go so well, and what we can do better - but mainly to eat donuts! But seriously, we are always looking for ways we can improve the service we offer - if you have any suggestions or comments we would love to hear them.

Some time ago, Google visited Stella Books and photographed the inside of the shop allowing people to use Street View to take a virtual tour. So if you've always wanted to visit Stella Books - but haven't managed it - why not take the virtual tour!

Honor C. Appleton contributed by Joanne

Honor C. Appleton, or Honor Charlotte Appleton in full, was born to parents Georgina and John Hoblyn Appleton, in Brighton on the south coast of England, on 4th February 1879. Appleton grew up with two older sisters, Rachel and Alice Mary (nicknamed 'Sissy') and one younger brother named John. Although not a great deal is known about her early childhood, it seems that her mother, Georgina, encouraged Honor and her sisters to take up the creative arts and painting.

Appleton was a student at various art schools. Firstly she attended South Kensington School, after which, on scholarship, she attended Frank Calderdon's School of Animal Painting...

HALF-SAFE by Ben Carlin contributed by Steve

As some of our long-term readers may know, one of the founders of Stella Books – Cliff – was the proud owner of a 1942 Willys Jeep. The Jeep had been in his family since being purchased just after the war as ‘army surplus’. It was used around the family farm and was the first vehicle Cliff drove – learning to drive it around the farm as a young boy.

Around 20 years ago Cliff and I restored the Jeep back to its original glory. Cliff used to love driving it around Tintern and had it shipped over to Portugal when he and Chris lived there. When Cliff died back in 2017 he left ‘Jeep’ to me. Although I don’t use it as much as I’d like, it is a fantastic vehicle to drive around in the summer – or even in the winter if you dress up warmly enough!
