March 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the March 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

What a month it has been - locally and internationally! On Wednesday 11th March, we suffered our worst ever flood. A high tide was forecast, and this was coupled with heavy flood water and a south westerly wind. This combination resulted in the River Wye at Tintern reaching the highest level we have ever seen. We had cleared the lowest shelves in several rooms on the ground floor as a precaution - but the flood went much higher than we expected, and we ended up with 3 or 4 inches of water throughout the entire ground floor of the shop. About 450 books were ruined. See the photo at the bottom of this newsletter to see Onyx enjoying the watery view!

However, things could have been a lot worse. The river came in again on the Thursday morning - but thankfully it was not as high. By Thursday evening we had mainly cleared up with soggy books cleared off the shelves and industrial dehumidifiers starting to dry out bookcases and flooring. Thankfully, most of the water that crept in around our flood-boards or through gaps in the outer walls was quite clean. As we write this, business is largely back to normal. The shop is closed to the public whilst we dry things out - but we hope to be open again soon. We are processing internet orders as normal.

In other news we're all thankfully virus free! So far the virus has not affected the business. We are obviously taking the recommended hygiene precautions to keep ourselves and our customers safe. We have good supplies of packaging materials and the postal service is running fine. For international orders there may be a small delay; but this is a quickly evolving situation. We hope this newsletter finds you all safe and well.

The Art of Maurice Sendak By Selma G. Lanes contributed by Rosemary

What an informative book this is. It has been a pleasure to look through its pages of illustrations and detail.

The author and illustrator Maurice Sendak was born on 10th June 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish Jewish parents Sarah and Philip. He was the youngest of three children. As a child Maurice Sendak was called Murray and his earliest colour drawing of Mickey Mouse, done when he was six, is signed Murray Sendak. He was born in the same year asWalt Disney’s illustrious mouse who was an early dominant figure and “best friend.”
