Welcome to the April 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
Most importantly, we hope you and your families are safe and well. What a crazy month it's been. We ended last month battling flood water - and have spent April battling the Corona virus. Thankfully we remain virus free - and are managing to function reasonably well - albeit with a reduced staff.
After the flood in mid-March, we had closed the shop to the public whilst we dried things out. So we simply have not re-opened in compliance with the current lock-down. We have some staff working from home carrying out IT and admin tasks - it's actually given us an opportunity to do some data clean up tasks that we've been putting off for years! Anyhow, we've been able to keep the internet side of the business running well. The orders have kept coming in for which we are very grateful. The main issues we've had are with postal collections. These stopped last week so we've been having to take all parcels to the local sorting office. This is no big problem - but does mean that parcels are delayed by one day as the sorting office is only open for a few hours each morning.
We'll keep posting any updates on the home page of our website. Due to our reduced staff, we'd appreciate if any enquiries could be sent via email - answering the phone can be a little challenging at the moment.
We hope this newsletter gives you a little escape from the current situation. Sonia has written an interesting article about the ever-popular Lord of the Rings - in particular the rare deluxe edition, and Chris has written a steamy article all about... uh... steam! Enjoy!
Steam contributed by Chris
What springs to your mind when you hear the word steam? The kettle boiling, ready for a steaming hot cuppa? A steaming hot bath? Or sauna maybe? Or, like me, do you think of the magnificent steam locomotives that used to be a regular sight on our railways?
My earliest memories of steam trains are those of going on holiday to far away climes, well, actually it was to the south coast of England but in those days that was an epic journey by train from where we lived...

A Sample of New Stock
How many of you have read The Lord of the Rings from beginning to end? No, watching the films does not count! I have to admit that it took me three attempts to get through it. I finally managed to read the entire three books in my mid-teens. When I had accomplished this no small feat, I found that I did enjoy it. My favourite characters are Gollum and Shelob. Why? I couldn’t say… I think I like Gollum’s childlike simplicity although I might be biased with images of Gollum in the films turning his back and muttering ‘My precious’. Shelob is a huge spider guarding the pass into Mordor. Being a tarantula keeper, I guess it just fell into place.
