August 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the August 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope this newsletter finds you and your family safe and well. This month we have finally been able to start work on repairing the damage done by the floods all the way back in March. The primary work is to dig out the floors in two of the downstairs book rooms (as well as the hallway separating them). Once dug out, new insulation will be laid as well as a waterproof membrane, before a new layer of concrete being poured.

However, when we removed the bookcases in one of the rooms, we discovered the old fireplace (which had been bricked up many years ago) had a worrying bulge in it! So, the first job for the builders was to dig that out and make good. Additionally, in the hallway separating the two book rooms in question, a small dividing wall had been added at some time in the past. This wall needed removing to allow the floor work to proceed - but has resulted in the hallway being much lighter as well as opening up quite a bit of usable space around the stairs. We'll add a few photos below for those that find these things fascinating (click on the photos for larger versions). You can see why we are having to keep the shop closed to the public at the moment!

Meanwhile, the book business is ticking along nicely. Our supply lines seemed to have opened up again, so we are seeing lots of parcels of books arrive for us to evaluate. This should see our stock levels start to creep back up after a few months of lots of selling - but not much purchasing of new stock!

During these crazy times of worldwide pandemic, I am sure you have all heard of postage prices going up everywhere, especially USA. These price increases are a result of the pandemic leaving fewer passenger flights available and therefore much of the international post is having to go by freight plane. Unfortunately, we are not immune to these price rises and have carried these costs on your behalf for as long as we can. We are now working on our postage tables and shortly these price rises will be reflected on our website. Grab a postage bargain while you still can!

The Romance of the Railways contributed by Theresa

Trains and Railways is one of the most popular sections in the shop and online.

There have been many books written on Trains and Railways, detailing plans of carriages, Railway layouts, signalling, station plans etc. More Engineering than Romance, although I am not saying they are mutually exclusive.

The Dodo and its Kindred contributed by Chris

The Dodo and its Kindred by H.E. Strickland and A.G. Melville

“As dead as a Dodo!” Many will be familiar with this saying. But how many will, like me, not be familiar with the story that lies behind this fabled bird? When and why did the dodo become extinct? What did it look like? What did it eat? Where was it to be found?

On discovering this book in our Special Book Room, I was immediately fascinated. Published in 1848, here was an entire work dedicated to the Dodo and other extinct birds...
