Welcome to the September 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
This month progress on the building work has carried on a pace. The damaged floors have been dug out and fresh concrete laid. The final scree has yet to go down - but if feels like the end is finally in sight. We hope to get flooring down in the next couple of weeks - with the new bookcases following soon after that.
We mentioned last month about the changes we are making to our postage rates. We hoped to have this live by now - but development and testing has taken a little longer than planned. We now hope to go live with the system on 22nd September. So you have one more week to enjoy cheaper postage!
The autumn high-tides start this week. With the good weather we've had recently, we hope there won't be any repeat of the March flooding and the shop will stay safe and dry. We hope you enjoy this newsletter. Rosemary's article is a glance back over book sales during lockdown - and an opportunity for us to say a huge thanks to all who have supported us during this time. For our 'Featured Book' slot this month, Bernice takes a look at the fascinating life of Sir Henry Seagrave.
With Thanks contributed by Rosemary
Thanks to all our customers regular and new, we have been kept gainfully employed over these past few months.
The range of books we have shipped has been very interesting, encompassing a wide spectrum of subjects.
There have been many children’s books either old favourites such as Billy Bunter; Jennings; Rupert; Chalet School and the Enid Blyton’s series, or more recent authors/illustrators such as Lemony Snicket; J.K. Rowling; Michael Morpurgo and Quentin Blake. There have also been books to enchant such as the Pop-ups or to entice such as the Early Readers.

A Sample of New Stock
Sir Henry Seagrave, an early pioneer in the world of motor sport gives a fascinating insight into early 20th century motor racing. He explains that in 1928 when this book was written that motor racing is much safer than when it started the century before, even though casualties occurred at virtually every race! He talks about racing past, present and future describing with a sound technical sense and in detail his record of a unique racing career over eight years, and the story of his life with modesty and restraint. His recall for all the events he entered is amazing, listing the state of the track, the problems before and during the race and who won or lost.
It is astonishing to read, that the principles of the sport have changed very little in the last 100 years. Seagrave started when the sport was in its infancy and participated in both road racing and sprints and eloquently describes the conditions the drivers had to put up with...
