October 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the October 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

Every month we seem to get a little closer to getting the flood damage repaired. The final scree has now been laid - but needs a little bit of final fettling before the flooring can be laid. The bookcases that were damaged in the flood are being replaced and we've finally been able to give the carpenter the go-ahead.

We're not the only ones still repairing damage from the flood. As we write this, the local council are repairing the damage to the riverbank opposite the shop. There is a stream that runs under the shop and out into the river. During the heavy rain, a combination of the stream and the swollen river caused quite a large part of the riverbank to collapse. So, they are busy reinforcing the bank with clay and rocks. (See the photo - you can just see our sign hiding behind the truck! Click for a larger copy.)

Our postage rates have now all been updated. The changes we've made should make it much quicker and easier for us to update the postage costs on both our internal systems and our website - allowing us to keep up with the seemingly endless changes from our postal carriers.

We've recently done a lot of work on our information pages. These pages contain lists of books in various series, showing cover photos and, in some cases, the stories contained. These pages were all in a jumble and hard to find, but we've now reorganised them with a new index page. We plan on adding new pages over the coming months. The new index page can be found here, or click on Reference > Information pages on our website home page.

Finally, we've just purchased a lovely collection of motoring books covering a wide range of models and manufacturers - from Ford to Ferrari - including several books about the rivalry between these two companies. They should be on our website very soon so keep an eye out for them if that's a category that interests you. Anyway, we hope you enjoy the newsletter. As always, your comments and feedback are most welcome!

America contributed by Nicki

“We the People……………”

I have discovered that despite believing I knew a fair amount about the USA, its history, its geography, its politics, I actually have huge gaps in my knowledge. America has always seemed so familiar and what I know of it, I must confess, has mainly been learned through films, books and television. For reasons that may or may not be obvious my desire to understand more about the USA has grown over the last few years.

To know any country better it is necessary to learn about its past and that would help me to put current events into context. I have, over the last few months, started to read a lot more about America...

Jenny the Jeep contributed by Steve

Jenny the Jeep by Jack Townend

Knowing my interest in all things motoring, and especially in Willys Jeeps, my colleague recently showed me an interesting and (I believe) most unusual book about a very special Jeep. My last featured book article featured an amphibious World War II Jeep named Half-Safe and so I thought I’d continue the Jeep theme this month.

Anyhow, this Jeep book could not be more different from Half-Safe. Jenny the Jeep is the story of a pink (yes – PINK) Jeep that is picked on by her fellow green Jeeps for being different.
