Welcome to the November 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
This month we've had the first of the autumn high tides. This morning saw the river almost get as high as the road outside the shop - but thankfully it stopped there and didn't make an attempt at an unwelcome visit inside! We've just completed fitting some new flood boards which we hope will offer better protection than the last ones. They're a little fiddlier to fit - but considerably more robust!
It's not long now until the end-of-year festivities. So if you are thinking of buying a book as a gift for your nearest and dearest (there is of course no better gift to give in our humble opinion) take a peep at the last posting dates on our home page. These dates are the very latest dates where you can order a book and you just might receive it in time for Christmas - but no guarantees. So obviously we suggest you order well in advance.

You may have spotted it on some of the larger news outlets - November saw a significant birthday for one of the best known children's book characters. Rupert Bear turned 100! The BBC had a lovely article that's worth a read. Rupert continues to be very popular and we have many Rupert annuals and related books in stock. Hopefully the recent publicity will introduce Rupert to a new generation.
Finally, just to mention that we've almost completed the purchase of a large collection of Folio Society books. So keep an eye on our website - they should be hitting the shelves in the next few weeks.
Art contributed by Theresa
“Art is a necessity – an essential part of our enlightenment process. We cannot, as a civilized society, regard ourselves as being enlightened without the arts.” Ken Danby
Art can move us to tears, it can make us laugh, it can question our beliefs and the way we look at the world. I think art can be more than just a painting it can be an illustration, a building, ceramics, a film, a play, books - in fact it I think it can be all of them.
At Stella and Rose’s books it is one of my favourite sections, we currently have nearly six hundred art books in stock.

A History of the Earth and Animated Nature by Oliver Goldsmith
“Animated nature”. The title had me puzzled when I saw this two -volume set of books. Animated means excited, lively, spirited does it not? This will be interesting, I thought, a description of excited, lively, spirited Nature! But, as I found, there is another definition of animated – “endowed with life or the qualities of life”. Ah, this makes more sense. The history of the earth (inanimate) and the life on it (animate). And so I progressed beyond the title page…
In addition to A History of the Earth etc, we also have “An Introductory View of the Animal Kingdom” by Baron Cuver and “Copious Notes of Discoveries in Natural History and A Life of the Author” by Washington Irving. So lots to get my teeth into!
