Welcome to the March 2021 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
As always, we hope this newsletter finds you safe and well. This month spring seems to have finally arrived! We've had a few lovely warm days, and spring flowers are starting to put on their stunning display in the Wye Valley. A gaggle of 20+ Canada geese have taken up residence in the field opposite the shop adding an interesting new feature to the local soundscape.
You're probably all wondering how our building work is going. We're happy to report that this phase is pretty much complete! The new bookcases are installed and in use, new electrical wiring is complete, and the decorators are arriving next week to tidy up the various holes, gashes and general mess left behind. Phase two is to investigate the floor in room 2 - which was also paid a visit by the river last year. We hope to start this phase in a month or two, but for the moment we're enjoying a bit of peace and quiet. However, the roofers should be arriving any moment as we write this... so watch this space.
We recently made one of the largest book purchases we've made in several years with the purchase of over a thousand Folio Society books from a collector in Israel. The books arrived in 54 boxes, strapped to 3 shipping pallets! The shipping company dropped the pallets off in the road at 9am - so it was 'all hands on deck' to get them off the pallets and into the shop as quickly as possible! The new bookcases had their first use and came in very handy as we unpacked the boxes.

We're now gradually working our way through the collection and you'll see the books appearing on our website over the next couple of months.
Anyhow, we hope you enjoy this newsletter!
What did Andy Pandy, Christopher Robin, Zippy, Kermit, Bill Badger and Noddy all have in common?
Answer: They all had a bear in their lives! (To find out which bears you have to read to the end of the article…)
While these bears take many forms, I am going to focus on the beloved Teddy Bear for this article. How this delightful stuffed toy got its name is quite a long story. It began with Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States...

A Sample of New Stock
This is a wonderful book, depicting fifty different social types of the 1800s. From The Sovereign to a Farmer’s Boy; a Judge to a Gipsy (spelt Gipsey in this antiquarian tome). Full of glorious hand-coloured aquatint plates and a facing page of accompanying textual history, it depicts a huge range of social types and customs.
According to research, the plates are engraved from earlier images by William Henry Pyne (although they are not accredited in our copy), presumably from those published in his ‘The Costume of Great Britain’ (London: 1804, 60 plates). The plates are coloured by English engraver William Alexander.
