December 2021 Newsletter

Welcome to the December 2021 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As another crazy year comes to an end can we take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to all our customers for their support over the last 12 months. We really appreciate all the support and kind words - as well as all your orders! We hope you have all managed to stay safe and well and let's hope that that next year finally sees a return to some sort of normality.

Jo has written this month's article, a seasonally appropriate article on trees - accompanied with some beautiful photos. Sonia has contributed this month's featured book article, a beautiful Folio Society edition of Edward Lear's Complete Nonsense. Enjoy the article - especially the included limericks!

We hope you all have relaxing time over the next couple of weeks. As always, stay safe - and enjoy the newsletter!

Trees contributed by Joanne

Trees – perhaps we take them for granted as they are always there. One of the first things that we learn in early childhood may be what a tree looks like as we incorporate them into our first works of art. But do we always stop and think just how vital these trees are to life on our planet?

It is said that forests and trees are the lungs of the earth and, when you think about it, how true that is. Trees absorb the carbon dioxide that we breathe out and in turn release oxygen that animals and humans need to breathe in. It's a natural recycling process that is beneficial for all living things.

Edward Lear’s Complete Nonsense published by Folio Society contributed by Sonia

We love a Folio Society publication here! I have chosen Complete Nonsense by Edward Lear as my featured book this month. I am sure the older generation are very familiar with his works. I’m not too sure about the younger generation… perhaps now is their chance to familiarise themselves?

This book comprises of 5 of Edward Lear’s publications combined into one volume. The books are:

A Book of Nonsense (originally published in 1846) Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets (1871) More Nonsense Pictures, Rhymes, Botany, etc (1872) Laughable Lyrics: A Fourth Book of Nonsense Poems, Songs, Botany, Music, etc. (1877) and Nonsense Songs and Stories (1895)
