January 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to the January 2022 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2022! We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable break over the festive period. The good news is that we're still here and all staff members are fit and well! January is usually a quieter month for us - a chance to have a little breather after the Christmas rush. Having said that, we have just cleared out one of our rooms in the shop to have the flooring re-laid. This should be the final bit of work that needed to be done after the floods of 2020. This work should be completed by the end of February. Then begins the hard slog of putting the shop back in order before we can open to the public once more!

Our article of the month takes a celestial theme as Bernice takes you on a brief lunar tour, whilst our featured book is the whimsical 'Uncle's Animal Book'. And don't forget to check out our 'Photo of the Month' found at the bottom of the newsletter. Local photographer Chris Bryant (aka Sonia's husband) has supplied this month's stunning photo taken from the Eagle's Nest - a local viewpoint a short distance from the shop. We hope you enjoy the newsletter!

The Moon contributed by Bernice

These are questions I have often asked and although I think I know the answer I decided to find out.

As always, what started out as a fairly simple question turned into a complicated one!

UNCLE’S ANIMAL BOOK by G.E. Studdy contributed by Maria

UNCLE’S ANIMAL BOOK by G.E. Studdy

“Specially drawn and written for you”.

I wonder how many people will recognise the author/artist of this book? Perhaps you are a fan of Bonzo the dog, very popular in the 1920s?

This book was written and illustrated by the author/artist of the Bonzo books, George Studdy. Studdy was born in 1878 at the family home in Devonport, Devon, UK. In his boyhood George would join his father in outdoor activities such as hunting and shooting. He later attended Heatherley’s Art School in London and was soon sharing a studio with friends from art school, working hard to acquire sufficient material to fill a portfolio...
