February 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to the February 2022 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope you and your families are safe and well. In local news, the book shop continues to tick along well. We are still having various bits of work done but it does feel like we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We have new flooring being fitted to a couple of rooms next week - and that genuinely should complete the repairs from the great flood of 2020! Although we then have to put all the bookcases back into these rooms, this does take us one step closer to the day we re-open to the public.

Meanwhile, in book news, we have just purchased a beautiful large collection of A. & C. Black Colour Books. These distinctive books have beautiful bindings and illustrations; we'll be adding them to our website gradually over the next month so keep an eye out for them if they interest you.

With international travel seemingly sputtering into life, Rosemary's article this month might inspire you to visit the beautiful country of Norway. Alternatively, for the ornithologists among you, our featured book this month is a stunning book of bird paintings by little-known artist Henry Jones. Enjoy!

The Kingdom of Norway contributed by Rosemary

The Kingdom of Norway - a land of tolerance, respect and equality

Norway is part of Scandinavia, and its capital Oslo is on the same Latitude as the Orkney Isles. The king of Norway is Harald V with his queen Sonja. The northern portion is mostly above the Arctic Circle with the western and eastern areas being divided by mountain ranges called Lang Mountains. The fourth region is a narrow coastal land with many islands and narrow, steep fjords.

The international geological definition of a fjord is “a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier”. The name fjord relates to the ancient Viking phrase “where you travel across”. There are more than 1,000 fjords, some of which are famous with many tourists visiting Norway to see them.

The Bird Paintings of Henry Jones contributed by Chris

The Bird Paintings of Henry Jones (text by Bruce Campbell)

Henry Jones? Bird Paintings? Being a lover of birds and an admirer of the works of the great bird artists such as Audubon, Thorburn and Gould, I was immediately intrigued when I saw the title of this book. Who was Henry Jones? Why had I not heard of him before? The answer lay in Bruce Campbell’s introduction to the book.

Henry Jones was and still is a mysterious figure. According to Mr. Campbell, much of what we know about him is found in an unsigned obituary of a mere 200 words in Ibis, the journal of the British Ornithologists’ Union. He was born in 1838 near Folkestone and joined the army at the age of 22. He progressed through the ranks, becoming Captain at age 38 and finally retiring with the rank of Major, having served over 15 years in India and Cyprus.
