Welcome to the March 2022 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
As always, we hope you and your families are safe and well. We have finally had the last bit of flooring replaced on the ground floor of the shop. As we write this, the bookcases are being reinstalled in the affected rooms. It will be such a relief to see all the building works come to completion!
In other exciting news, we've fitted an external camera to the shop to allow us to monitor the river level remotely. During the recent storms we kept having to rush into the shop at all hours in case of flooding. The river in Tintern is tidal - so the flooding risk depends on tide levels, recent rain and wind direction. Being able to see the river level allows us to quickly know if there is a risk of the shop flooding. Anyhow, the camera automatically uploads images to our website every few minutes. So if you want to know what the weather is like in Tintern, or the current river level, pop along to our 'about' page to see the latest picture!
As always, we have some great articles this month. Jo has written an article looking at the life and works of M. Pardoe - famous for writing the 'Bunkle' series. And Theresa has chosen this month's featured book - 'Erte at Ninety-Five'. This stunning book contains some of the graphics the artist created during the 1980's. Enjoy!
M. Pardoe contributed by Joanne
M. Pardoe or Margot Mary Pardoe was born in August 1902 in London and was the only child to a well-off family, her father being a surgeon.
She was educated at a boarding school in Hertfordshire until she was 17. It is said that she used only her initial M. instead of her full name, as she was teased during her younger years about how her name rhymed! Although perhaps her publisher thought that using an initial only would make the author more appealing to a wider audience, a tactic that has worked well for some.
The family spent summers on the French Riviera and Pardoe lived with a family in Paris after her schooling, where she trained to be an opera singer. During her life, her family moved around, living in London, Aberdeenshire and finally moving to Hampshire. Pardoe would remember areas where she had lived and holidayed and use them as a base for some of the settings in her books.

Erté at Ninety-Five - The Complete New Graphics
Erté at Ninety-Five, published in 1987, contains the graphics the artist has created between 1982 and 1987 using serigraph or silk screen printing. The introduction to the book is by Erté himself, he talks about his childhood, his works and working practices. If you love design, I am sure you will love this book.
“Erté’s creative demands on the print medium have required the development of new techniques in serigraph printing and other graphic methods, such as hot-stamping of metallic foils and embossing.”
