Welcome to the April 2022 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
As we write this, the first bluebells are just starting to appear in the woods around Tintern. They are such a joy to see on the morning dog-walk - a carpet of blue! Meanwhile, at the shop we have nearly completed reinstalling all our bookcases with a view to re-opening to the public soon. Watch the banner on our home page for further news.
We mentioned last month about our new webcam that can be viewed from our website. We have now got the camera mounted permanently on the outside of the building so the picture quality is much better.

We recently purchased a large collection of A&C Colour Books. Sonia's has been busy getting them on our shelves but she's taken time out to write this months article - all about these beautiful books with their stunning plates and eye-catching bindings. Michelle has chosen our featured book this month - The Herb-Garden by Frances A Bardswell (coincidentally this is an A&C Black Colour Book!). So if you're green fingered or thinking of starting a herb garden - this might just be the book for you!
And finally, Chris Bryant has provided another photo for our newsletter - this time of St. Mary's Church. The church is nestled in the woods above the village and has an interesting history. We hope you enjoy the newsletter!

Adam & Charles Black publishing house was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland shortly after Adam (the ‘A’ in A&C Black) Black’s 23rd birthday in 1807, when he opened his own bookshop. Many booksellers in Edinburgh at the time were also publishers. Adam’s nephew, Charles (the ‘C’ in A&C Black), joined the business in 1834 until his death in 1854. In 1889, the business was moved from Edinburgh to Soho, London. In 2000, A&C Black was purchased and, at the time of writing, is still owned by Bloomsbury Publishing Plc.
For us, as booksellers, when someone offers us A&C Black Colour Books, we spend a lot of time checking that all the colour plates are present as it is these that give the books their value and makes them collectable.

A Sample of New Stock
The Herb-Garden by Frances A Bardswell Published by A & C Black
I was instantly intrigued when I spotted this little book. It isn’t very often that I see a gardening book dedicated solely to the cultivation of herbs. My interest in this subject started when I bought my own house and garden a few years ago. I knew that I wanted lavender bushes for their fragrance and attraction to bees, but I hadn’t really given any thought to what else. I then found myself in garden centres, sniffing various herb plants to find out what smelled nice and bringing them home to plant all together in a small section of my garden. Maybe this book would have helped me plan it all out correctly and tell me which plants should go next to which.
