May 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to the May 2022 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope you and your families are safe and well. To start with, we have some really big news: we have reopened to the public! Yay! We opened our doors again on Monday 16th May; no fanfare as we wanted to avoid any crowds. As with all shops, we have done what we can to keep staff and customers safe; we have screens around the shop counters and a hand sanitising station as you enter the shop, we are also asking all our customers to wear a face mask. We are only accepting card payments. So, with the Wye Valley looking glorious, why not combine a visit to the area with popping in for a browse around our shelves? Our new opening hours are 10am - 4pm, 7 days a week.

The bluebells have been in full bloom over the last few weeks; our photo of the month gives a little glimpse of the stunning blue carpet that covers the floors of many local woods. And continuing the botanical theme, the article of the month has been contributed by Maria as she takes you on a brief tour of her new garden. Bernice has chosen our featured book this month: a dark tale of canine jealousy! But it does have a happy ending! Enjoy!

My New Garden contributed by Maria

You may remember my previous article from last year about my experience of moving house?

Well… this year I thought I would write about my new garden.

I moved to Hay-on-Wye in February 1994 and for 27 years we only had a balcony with our maisonette (overlooking my neighbours beautiful garden I will add) so I never had a chance to enjoy a garden myself, until last year when we moved into our new house in Chepstow.

I must admit that I am very excited about all the green shoots that have been appearing in recent weeks…

Bingo and Babs by Alan Wright contributed by Bernice

Bingo and Babs by Alan Wright

I picked this book up while tidying in the shop and was captivated by its charm and cheekiness. It is a simple story but delightfully told. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and looking at the colourful illustrations which enhance it and bring the story to life. It is one of many such beautiful books we have in stock, and it also reminded me of all my favourite books when I was just a few years younger.

Bingo and Babs is a story about a dog, Bingo, who doesn’t like sharing his mistress, Peggy, with the horrid smiling thing she calls Babs.
