September 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to the September 2022 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope this newsletter finds you all well. Here, the summer heat has abated and some much-needed rain has left the Wye Valley looking a little greener than a month ago!

With the return of most children to school after the summer holidays, the shop is somewhat quieter - especially on the weekends. So if you prefer to visit the shop when it's quieter, now is a good time.

In this month's article, Steve takes us on a vampire hunt (no garlic required), and for our featured book, Chris has chosen a stunning book on the River Esk.

We hope you enjoy the newsletter!

Our vampire hunt was to start at the South-East edge of the Black Mountain, between Sennybridge and Ystradgynlais in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. My brother-in-law (Mark) assured me there was definitely a vampire to be found – but not of the Bram Stoker variety. Rather, this was the flying kind – a de Havilland Vampire.

Up River - The Song of the Esk contributed by Chris

Up River - The Song of the Esk written and illustrated by Darren Woodhead

This book caught my eye on the shelf because on front and back of the dustwrapper are beautiful watercolour paintings, on the front a singing male blackcap and on the back a winter woodland scene.

On reading the introduction what impressed me most was, firstly, the fact that the artist never uses white paint, instead he allows the white paper to shine through his paintings. To me that seems like painting in the negative – working all around the aspects of the picture that are to remain white. Secondly, all these pieces of artwork were completed directly from life while the artist was observing the subject in its natural environment...
