October 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to the October 2022 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope this newsletter finds you and your families fit and well. Autumn is gradually creeping into the Wye Valley and the leaves are starting to turn on the trees. The colder mornings often bring with them beautiful mists along the river. In our photo this month, Chris Bryant has captured the view above the mist from Wyntour's Leap.

Our articles this month both focus on famous illustrators. In her article, Michelle takes you on a brief tour of the life and work of Arthur Rackham. Meanwhile, Sonia has chosen the stunning work of W. Heath Robinson in this month's featured book: Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales published by The Folio Society.

As you may have heard, there is ongoing strike action by Royal Mail postal workers here in the UK. Due to this, we are unable to provide last posting dates for Christmas. If you are buying for Christmas all we can suggest is that you get your order in as soon as possible. There will be no guarantees for Christmas deliveries this year (for international or domestic orders). Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Enjoy the newsletter!

Arthur Rackham contributed by Michelle

Arthur Rackham, one of 12 children, was born 19th September 1867 in Vauxhall, London and died 6th September 1939.

Arthur Rackham is undoubtedly a name that can be placed right in the heart of the Golden Age of book illustration, and with it conjures up images of elves, fairies, princes & princesses, brave young knights and dragons. Some would say he was a direct inspiration for Disney many years later.

The last years of the nineteenth century saw a huge new interest in folk & fairy tales by the general public. This subject was revived mostly by the authors Andrew Lang and Joseph Jacobs and could be seen in the pages of Strand magazine from all corners of the world.
