November 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to the November 2022 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope this newsletter finds you and your families fit and well. Autumn has now fully arrived, and the Wye Valley is looking resplendent in its full autumn colours. It's a perfect time to visit! Speaking of which, avid readers will remember all the building work we had done after the 2020 flood. Unfortunately, the wooden floor in a section of the shop downstairs has decided to fail (seemingly a delayed response to getting soaked in the flood!) which means we need close to the public for three months between January and March next year. Business will of course continue online. We hope we have given you enough notice to visit the shop before we close for this work!

Just a reminder regarding the ongoing strike action by Royal Mail postal workers here in the UK. Due to this, we are unable to provide last posting dates for Christmas. If you are buying for Christmas all we can suggest is that you get your order in as soon as possible. There will be no guarantees for Christmas deliveries this year (for international or domestic orders). Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Enjoy the newsletter!

A Wonderful Weekend contributed by Rosemary

I live near Monmouth and am lucky enough to be able to walk from my house into some woods where I can listen to bird song and watch the changing light, depending on the time of year, day, and weather.

To my joy I recently visited an erstwhile intensively farmed, 3,500-acre farm in Horsham, West Sussex called Knepp Castle Estate. Talk about being good for human health, let alone the blueprint for the fundamental health of our planet...

Zozo (or Curious George) contributed by Maria

Zozo (or Curious George) by H.A. & Margret Rey

Curious George has become one of the most loved and recognizable characters from children’s literature. His stories are so popular that they have never been out of print since their first published date in the early 1940s.

Despite being a monkey, George is never pictured with a tail – something I hadn’t really registered until I was researching for this article. George is described as a ‘good little monkey, and always very curious’. I wonder how many people know that the first British edition of Curious George was actually entitled “Zozo” so as not to associate King George VI with a monkey!
