Welcome to the February 2023 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
The main news this month has been the start of our long awaited building work. After a couple of weeks of clearing the room, the builders arrived on the Monday 6th February and started digging out the old floor. As we write this, the concrete has just been poured! It needs a few days to fully cure, but then we can start work on other bits and pieces before the new flooring is laid.

In other news, the fallout from the Royal Mail ransomware attack rumbles on. The attack meant we could not ship international items for almost three weeks – disastrous for small businesses! However, we managed to process all international orders, and then emailed the customers to let them know there would be a delay in the actual shipping. All our customers were very patient - thank you! Royal Mail are now shipping internationally once again (at least for business customers). All hold-backs have now been shipped although Royal Mail are warning that international items will likely take longer than 'usual' to be delivered. Again, we thank all our customers for their patience.
Finally, we thought we'd share a fun book-related story that one of our staff spotted in the local news. The collection of old books by P.G. Wodehouse, which were destined for the tip were saved by staff at Five Lanes Recycling Centre, near Caldicot. We are very glad to hear they have been saved!
We hope you enjoy the newsletter!
Some books are different, some books have to have a special section of their own. Pop-up, action and moveable books all fall into this category with their own section in Room Four of the Stella and Rose’s Bookshop in Tintern.
Having grown up with pop-up books like Jan Pienkowski’s ‘Haunted House’ I have an enduring love of this type of book and working at the bookstore has introduced me to all kinds of moving books I was previously unaware of.
Moveable books were first created in the 1200’s by Benedictine Monks who attached sliding wheels to books to help work out the holy days. While that was the first known example of books with moving parts, the first book that had pop-up parts and was commercially available was published in 1775.

A Sample of New Stock
Famous for his science fiction novels, now regarded as classics, H.G. Wells is not so well-known as an author of children’s books. In fact Wells wrote several books for younger children including ‘The Adventures of Tommy’ (1929), ‘Little Wars’ (1913) and this little book ‘Floor Games’, published in 1911.
Although he was a pacifist at heart, ‘Floor Games’ and ‘Little Wars’ were written by Wells to provide a more structured way to play war games. In fact, ‘Little Wars’ could be considered the first popular handbook for war gaming in the English language.
So, what are these floor games that Wells is describing?
