Welcome to the June 2023 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
As always, we hope this newsletter finds you and your family well! The recent good weather has seen a steady increase in tourists to Tintern, especially now that the wireworks bridge has reopened. The contractors have done a great job and the bridge looks shiny and new. Incidentally, the official opening is happening on Wednesday the 21st of June at 2pm with weatherman Derek Brockway doing the honours. A few days later on the 24th is the Tintern village fete; well worth a visit if you're in the area with lots happening throughout the day.
Jo has written our article of the month exploring the life and works of children's author Vera Southgate. And staying on the subject of children's books, Steve takes a trip down memory lane with our featured book: The Mountain of Adventure by Enid Blyton. Enjoy!
Vera Southgate (birth name Pegg) was born in County Durham in March 1916 and was raised alongside her sister Mary. Both sisters would eventually train and become teachers in their own right. Vera's career was varied, and she taught children of many ages including infant, junior, secondary and also at special schools.
In 1942 she married Arthur Southgate and stopped teaching for a while. Sadly, Vera was widowed only six years later in 1948 and, having no children, she returned to teaching, this time in Manchester where she met and married her second husband Douglas Thomas Booth in 1961.

A Sample of New Stock
Like many of my age, I grew up reading Enid Blyton. For most of my childhood, my parents made the decision not to have a TV in the house. Although this was an unpopular decision with myself and my siblings, I look back with admiration as it meant we were moved to use our time in other (more constructive?) ways. Living in rural Mid-Wales, this meant spending a lot of time outside, but it also meant reading – a lot of reading!
My earliest memories of reading include Malcolm Saville, Arthur Ransome, Ladybird books, as well as lots of non-fiction such as Usborne books on nature. But probably the largest number of books in our home library were written by Enid Blyton.
