Welcome to the July 2023 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
As always, we hope this newsletter finds you and your family well. In our last newsletter we were commenting on how nice the weather had been. How things can change! But the recent rain has left everything looking lush and green so we can't complain too much.
Stella Books now has some competition in the village with the opening of the Tintern Village Hall Book Shed! It's open 24/7 for all your book emergencies! So if your book needs are more 'holiday reading' than collectible rarity, head down to the village hall!
It's also worth mentioning that Tintern Abbey have a number of events on over the summer. If you fancy learning about life as a monk, falconry or becoming a medieval jester, head over to the Cadw website for more information.
In our article this month Theresa takes a look at famous book illustrator Errol La Cain. And for the green-fingered among you, Maria's chosen featured book (books?) is Familiar Garden Flowers (a set of five books). These beautifully illustrated books catalogue a wide variety of plants found in typical English gardens.
And finally, our photo of the month is of the Tidenham Tunnel. Now that the Wireworks Bridge has reopened, it's again possible to cycle or walk from Chepstow to Tintern along the old railway. Enjoy!

Errol Le Cain was born in Singapore in 1941 and shortly afterwards moved to Agra in India. Although Errol Le Cain had no formal art training he showed an obvious talent from an early age. He first showed an interest in film making and at the age of eleven made a short film called "The Enchanted Mouse" and then at the age of fifteen another film called "The Little Goatherd". This brought him to the attention of the agents of the film distributor Pearl and Dean, so in 1956 at the tender age of 15 they paid his passage from Singapore to London to start a career in film and television animation. Edward Hulme Having lived in a flat for most of my adult life I am now very much enjoying having a garden and learning about different plants and what they do and don’t like. This set of books really appealed to me when I first saw it. It is so attractive to look at – both the covers of each book and the beautiful chromolithographic plates of the garden flowers (200 in total!). The books look at the different variety of plants that can be found in a typical English garden and offer detailed descriptions and a history of each plant as well as tips on how to plant, propagate, maintain etc. Read more... |
