Welcome to the October 2023 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
After a warm September, it feels like Autumn is now on the way here in the UK with temperatures dropping to single figures. It finally feels like it's time to put the heating on at home - or maybe curl up in front of the fire with a good book?
No real shop news here... the business is ticking along but quieter now with fewer tourists popping in for a browse. We have purchased a lot of books on The Second World War recently so you might want to check out that category if you're a military history buff!
We're always glad when the Autumn high tides are past. This year, winds and weather were favourable resulting in the high tides at the end of September not being too bad; the water came across the road outside the shop - but thankfully it made no attempt to come in and check out our stock! The high tides do result in the world-famous Severn Bore - definitely worth watching if you're visiting the area during a particularly high tide. The next one will probably be in mid-March 2024.
Our photo of the month is from the recent Chepstow Festival of Arts Seal Sculpture Trail. Aiming to raise awareness about the impact of pollution on the river’s inhabitants, local artists and secondary school students were invited to decorate ten seal statues of Sammy the Seal, a frequent visitor to the town. They look very splendid! The photo is of the statue next to the old bridge.
Anyhow, that's enough waffling... we hope you enjoy the newsletter and articles this month!
When I took over the buying of books from Cliff & Chris more than ten years ago (that is, everything except children's which is Maria’s speciality), I never would have guessed how many military type books there are! I say type as many end up on the history shelves as opposed to the military shelves, also the aviation shelves, and the maritime shelves… It is hard to know where to draw the line when military becomes history. I try to stick to a rule of thumb that our military shelves are from World War I subjects onwards, anything before that goes into history or, sometimes, our transport shelves but it doesn’t always work out that way!
As a shop, we find we are offered many, many military books, whether they are modern books about World War II, the Vietnam war and today’s defences or books about the American Civil War and Custer’s Last Stand...

A Sample of New Stock
Scenes of Commerce by Land and Sea by Rev. Isaac Taylor
So, I was browsing the Natural History section in our Special Book Room on our website and this title caught my eye. That looks interesting I thought, especially when I saw the subtitle “Where Does It Come From? Answered”. And indeed, it is interesting!
Published almost 200 hundred years ago in 1839 by John Harris, leading British publisher of illustrated books and fiction from 1801 to 1839, this book has 396 pages including an index and 66 black and white engravings. Let’s take a look inside…
The preface gives a flavour of the contents: ‘In juvenile minds, the thirst for information manifests itself with peculiar ardour; and hence the questions, incessantly reiterated, - “What is it?” – “Where does it come from?” – “How is it made?” – The answers to these questions, may be made vehicles of very useful information’.
