Welcome to the January 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
We hope this newsletter finds you and your loved ones well - we hope you had a relaxing and restful festive period.
Having survived the recent storms and flooding, we seem to now be in a cold snap. But no snow yet for Tintern!
With little to report locally or in book news, we thought we'd tell you a little about what we've been buying recently. Maria has just about finished cataloguing a large W.E. Johns collection (Biggles, Worrals and Gimlet). Sonia has been working her way though some interesting art books including books on Italian frescos and illuminated manuscripts. We are always on the look-out for Folio Society books and were recently able to purchase a small - but eclectic - collection. We also hope to complete the purchase of a New Naturalist collection in the next week or so. Hopefully something there to tickle your fancy?
Our article this month focuses on Australian children's book illustrator Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Possibly best known for combining fairy tales with animals from the Australian outback. Our featured book this month might appeal to the green-fingered among you: Thomas Mawson - Life, Gardens and Landscapes by Janet Waymark. This book is the first full biography of Mawson who became one of the most sought after landscape designers of the earliest twentieth century.
We hope you enjoy the newsletter!
You would be forgiven for never having heard the name Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, an Australian illustrator of children’s fiction (I am writing this from the UK). At the turn of the 20th century, she was well known for bringing fairies and other magical creatures to life, using mainly pen and ink and watercolour. Fairies, brownies, elves, and witches interact with the animals of the Australian outback. When she died in 1960, her fame was dwindling, as artistic tastes of children turned to focus on the less naïve.
Ida was the youngest of six children. Born in 1888, she had one sister. and two brothers. There were also two older siblings who died while still young children.
