Welcome to the April 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
The weather seems to finally be improving a bit, and spring has definitely arrived. The bluebells are starting to put on their glorious spring show - we'll try and include a photograph next month! Our photo this month is some beautiful spring blossom.
In the bookshop, the Enid Blyton collection we mentioned in our last newsletter is now all catalogued and on our shelves (and website). The transport book collection is a work in progress - it was a large collection!
Locally, there is conservation work happening on Tintern Abbey. However, CADW are offering a 10% discount on admission prices due to the scaffolding; so maybe a good time to save a little money on a visit? The Wye Valley is always a beautiful place to walk, however, on Sunday May 14th, the local Rotary clubs have organised six walks along various parts of the Wye between Monmouth and Chepstow. The walks are of various lengths and should be a wonderful opportunity to explore the Wye Valley.
In our article of the month, Bernice takes a look at a very British subject: the weather! If you've ever caught the shipping forecast on BBC Radio 4, you'll find this article fascinating as it explains the history of that iconic radio feature. Meanwhile, our featured book this month is actually a series - Yeadon's Register of LNER Locomotives. Maria explains the history of these unusual books and includes some photos of the contents. Enjoy!
We are having to get used to the frequency and ferocity of storms. We have currently experienced more than seven storms this winter already. With this information in mind, I was very interested in an article about a shipwreck off Porth Alerth near Moelfre on Anglesey that was instrumental in the creation of the shipping forecast. As often happens, tragedy leads to a catalyst for change.

Yeadon’s Register of LNER Locomotives
As I am normally the buyer of Children’s books for the business I often write about children’s books, authors and illustrators. However, as we have recently purchased a very large collection of books about trains and buses, I thought I would take a look at what the collection contained.
Yeadon’s Register is a series of 56 books covering all the locomotives of the LNER (London and North Eastern Railway). Each volume is well illustrated with class introduction and full history of each locomotive, leaving the reader in no doubt as to what happened to any particular LNER locomotive during its lifetime. A must for the railway enthusiast!
