Welcome to the May 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
Firstly, apologies for the lateness of this newsletter. We've had a couple of staff on holiday. Anyhow, everything has been ticking along well here at the shop. For the Wye Valley, it's one of the prettiest times of year with the bluebells in full-bloom. Our photo this month tries to capture just a little of that beauty from the nearby Cadora Woods.
If fishing is your thing, you'll be pleased to know we've purchased a large collection of angling books - mainly focused on carp fishing. We've currently processed around half, so keep an eye on the website as these are added over the next few weeks.
We always like to meet our customers and put a face to a name. So we might try and mention a few of these moments in our future newsletters. Back at the end of April, we were delighted to meet long-term customer Mr. Perry from Plymouth who was celebrating his 72nd birthday by having a day out which included a visit to Stella Books. Although having bought many books over the years, he had never visited the shop. We really hope you enjoyed your day out Mr. Perry - and the books you were able to find during your visit! It was lovely to meet you!

Our article and featured book this month both focus on the great outdoors. Alison has written a interesting introduction to the Highways and Byways series of books; while Sonia goes down the natural history route with a look at Deer of the World. Enjoy!
“What dull men are those that tarry at home, When abroad they might wantonly rome, (sic) And gain such experience, and spy too Such Countries, and Wonders as I do. – Cowley”
Excerpt from Highways and Byways in Northamptonshire and Rutland, by H. A. Evans (1918)
We sell a number of different types of old guidebooks in our shop and one of my favourites is the ‘Highways and Byways’ series, each with numerous illustrations, some by noted artists. The ‘Highways and Byways’ series includes 36 pocket-sized regional guides which were hugely popular in their day. They had very distinct branding , which made them instantly noticeable...

A Sample of New Stock
Looking around the office again for inspiration in preparing my featured book article, I noticed we had multiple copies of Deer of the World. I don’t know about you, but I am an animal lover and was immediately drawn to this title. Here in the Wye Valley and the neighbouring Forest of Dean, we have many Deer although I could not tell you what ‘brand’ they are! They are very stealthy creatures and I find myself in awe of them whenever I come across one… so silent in their comings and goings. I guess not so good if they are loose in your countryside garden demolishing your beloved plants!
