June 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to the June 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

We hope this newsletter finds you and your loved ones well. Summer here in Wales seems a little reticent to arrive this year, but the temperature is gradually improving, hopefully the sunshine will follow soon!

Although the Wye Valley Greenway remains closed to cyclists, there are a couple of local events coming up soon which might tempt you to Tintern. Firstly, Tintern Fete is on Saturday June 29th at Leytons Field - 'high seas themed family fun and adventure'. Then in July (11th-14th) there is the 'Folk on the Lawn' event at Abbey Mill - 'music, poetry, comedy and spoken word'.

In our article this month Steve dreams of Ferrari ownership but ends up making do with a good book. And Lisa takes a look at a lesser-known work by Sir Phillip Pullman. Our photo this month (thank you Chris) takes you a little further into Wales and into the stunning Brecon Beacons. Enjoy!

Spring Heeled Jack by Phillip Pullman contributed by Lisa

It was the colourful cover of the book that caught my eye and also the title. I was intrigued to know who Spring-Heeled Jack was, so I turned the book over and it describes him as a sort of modern-day Superhero. I have since found out that he was a notorious figure in Victorian times who was reputed to have attacked women, terrorised and harassed people at night and was able to leap high into the air.

Victims described him as having a terrifying appearance with "eyes that resembled red balls of fire" like the devil, but more importantly was his ability to make extraordinary leaps into the air to escape capture. He would leap across rooftops with astonishing agility blowing flames from his mouth...
