We hope this newsletter finds you and your loved ones well. Summer here in Wales seems a little reticent to arrive this year, but the temperature is gradually improving, hopefully the sunshine will follow soon!
Although the Wye Valley Greenway remains closed to cyclists, there are a couple of local events coming up soon which might tempt you to Tintern. Firstly, Tintern Fete is on Saturday June 29th at Leytons Field - 'high seas themed family fun and adventure'. Then in July (11th-14th) there is the 'Folk on the Lawn' event at Abbey Mill - 'music, poetry, comedy and spoken word'.
In our article this month Steve dreams of Ferrari ownership but ends up making do with a good book. And Lisa takes a look at a lesser-known work by Sir Phillip Pullman. Our photo this month (thank you Chris) takes you a little further into Wales and into the stunning Brecon Beacons. Enjoy!
Whilst idly staring at a shelf of Ferrari books, (and daydreaming of owning one), a question popped into my head: which are there more of - actual Ferrari cars, or books about the iconic vehicles?
Before we attempt to answer that conundrum, a very brief history about this famous brand.
After working as a racing driver for Fiat and Alfa Romeo, Enzo Ferrari set up Scuderia Ferrari in 1929.

A Sample of New Stock
It was the colourful cover of the book that caught my eye and also the title. I was intrigued to know who Spring-Heeled Jack was, so I turned the book over and it describes him as a sort of modern-day Superhero. I have since found out that he was a notorious figure in Victorian times who was reputed to have attacked women, terrorised and harassed people at night and was able to leap high into the air.
Victims described him as having a terrifying appearance with "eyes that resembled red balls of fire" like the devil, but more importantly was his ability to make extraordinary leaps into the air to escape capture. He would leap across rooftops with astonishing agility blowing flames from his mouth...

Covers are very edge-worn and scuffed. New endpapers. Two names in ink to top margins of title-pages of both volumes (one name crossed out in each volume). Heavy foxing to contents and a musty (antiquarian) smell to contents. All plates are present. Fold-out map of Monmouthshire to volume 1 has been neatly repaired on verso with clear tape... Price: £260.00 | 1st 1926 Dark green cloth, gilt titles to spine, gilt border and vignette to front cover. Pictorial endpapers. Top edge gilt. Absolutely delightful b/w illustrations of Pooh Bear and friends. A children's classic. Spine and corners are bumped. Spine is a little darkened. Light mark to front edge of spine and a few small wrinkles to cloth at front edge. Some foxing to text block. There are some slightly grubby fingermarks to page margins and a couple of joints/hinges are cracked. Still a very decent copy of a scarce first edition. Price: £620.00 | 1st thus 1997 Six volume set comprising: Brighton Rock; The Power and the Glory; The Heart of the Matter; The End of the Affair; The Quiet American; and A Burnt-Out Case. Introduced by Norman Sherry. Green cloth, red & black illustration to front boards. Red endpapers. B/w illustrations. Some minor marks to text blocks. Page 99/100 of Brighton Rock is heavily creased with a small closed tear to margin. Mark to front cover and spine of A Burnt-Out Case. Contained in publisher's slipcase... Price: £150.00 | 1st 2011 Volume II only (of 3 volumes). This book covers Elizabeth's life as a widow controlling regency during her eldest son's minority and imprisonment. Edited by Nadine Akkerman. Navy blue cloth boards, gilt title to spine. Shelf-wear to top of spine. Name & date in ink to front endpaper. Else a lovely copy. Cream dustwrapper has a small closed tear (no loss) to lower front edge. Price: £230.00 |
