Welcome to the July 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
As always, we hope this newsletter finds you well. Nothing much to report from the shop. The Great British Summer continues with more than usual quantities of rain! It's been nice to see a steady number of visitors to the shop. We've just heard that the landslide on the Wye Valley Greenway is finally being cleared - so hopefully that will increase traffic to the village.
In other news... one of our staff members spotted an interesting article online listing the best selling books of all time. It makes for interesting reading. No surprises at the top of the list, but some interesting entries lower down.
Many of you may know the partners, Sonia & Maria, are deaf and have hearing dogs... Hearing Dogs charity are appealing for volunteers to train the pups. So if you're a doggy person and have the time and circumstances, why not check out this very rewarding opportunity?
Our articles this month focus on travel and cooking! Maria reminisces about her recent trip around Scotland in her camper van; Theresa looks at some retro-cooking in her featured book article. Enjoy!

We planned to follow the NC500 (North Coast 500) route but knew that we wouldn’t have time to seriously enjoy ourselves if we attempted to do the whole 500 miles from Inverness to Inverness. We therefore decided to follow the route travelling the west coast of Scotland and just see how far we got.

A Sample of New Stock
This book was once owned by the internationally renowned Eleanor Lowenstein, her bookplate is in the front of the book. Eleanor Lowenstein opened the Corner Bookshop on Fourth Avenue New York and was offered her first cookery book collection in 1946. This was just the beginning and the rest as they say is history!
Mr Briggs in his Preface says of his recipes the following ‘I have bestowed every Pains to render them easily practicable, and adapted to the Capacities of those who may be ordered to use them. To waste Language and high Terms on such Subjects, appears to me to render the Art of Cookery embarrassing, and to throw difficulties in the Way of the Learner…’
