October 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to the October 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

We hope this newsletter finds you well. Autumn is slowly descending on the Wye Valley and our photo this month gives a taste of this beautiful time of year. We've been busy with some maintenance here at the shop. Our trusty server that hosts our website was getting a bit long in the tooth so needed replacement. This has gone very smoothly with little or no downtime. Having said that, if you do spot any issues with our website please let us know.

We always like to highlight local events and this month is no different. 'Shadows of Tintern offers a magical night in an outstanding setting, an evocative journey through this spectacular site-specific installation.' The event runs on 18th and 19th October so only a few days away.

And finally, our 'End of Summer Sale' will be finishing at the end of the month on Oct 30th. So don't miss out on an opportunity to grab a bargain.

That's all the news this month. Our article this month takes a look at creepy-crawlies whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Steve takes a railway journey through the Arabian Peninsular (or at least dreams of doing so). Enjoy!

What a contrast! Where can we find that kind of variety in the natural world? In the world of insects! Over one million species of insects have been discovered and described but it is estimated that there may be as many as 10 million species on earth. There are approximately 1.4 billion insects for every person on Earth and the total weight of all the insects is about 70 times more than all the people. Wow! What amazing statistics from the Royal Entomological Society! Aren’t we glad that insects are such tiny creatures….

The Hejaz Railway by James Nicholson contributed by Steve

Growing up in the age of diesel locomotives, I have always been fascinated by steam. Partly I have my father to blame for this. He’s an engineer and welder and would often take us kids to museums that featured various engineering marvels. One of my favourites remains the York Railway Museum. I also grew up living opposite an old GWR station and goods shed in Sennybridge, Wales; the station closed in October 1962 with the Neath and Brecon Railway line closing completely in November 1969. I often wondered what it used to be like to have steam trains running past the house!
