Welcome to the November 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
As always, we hope this newsletter finds you and your loved ones well. As we write this it's snowing heavily in Tintern! We seem to have skipped autumn and moved directly to winter! Anyhow, autumn has been as stunning as always here in the Wye Valley; our photo of the month comes from just up the valley in Symonds Yat and gives a glimpse of the beautiful scenery we're blessed with here.
We always love meeting interesting people in the shop. Back in late September we had a visit from Roger Stennett, who was celebrating his 75th birthday (I know he does look young, doesn't he). Roger has been visiting the shop for over 40 years but today he found a book - one of the Cardiff Yesterday series - with a picture of his father on, Stan Stennett MBE, who was a professional actor, musician, entertainer and stand-up comic. Roger, who is a playwright, poet, screenwriter and scriptwriter (and the writer of 'Danger Mouse'!!), spoke of his early childhood memories of being in theatres and growing up with famous people as friends. Roger (who has released a number of poetry books recently) told us of the impact that his friend Ted Hughes had on his life. It was fascinating talking to Roger!

In our article this month, Theresa takes a look at the interesting history of The Brothers Grimm and how they came to compile the fairy tales which they are now famous for. In our featured book, Chris dives into a very rare and collectible book about the Wye Valley dating from 1841. It provides an amazing look back in time to when the River Wye was a busy throughfare and hive of industry - complete with beautiful hand-coloured illustrations. Enjoy!
We may not all be familiar with the title ‘Kinder – und Hausmarchen’, but you will be familiar with the Folk Tales within – Cinderella, Hansel & Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, the list goes on!
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were German academics who collected and published folklore and their first book was published in 1812.
In 1796, when the brothers were quite young, their father died. As a result they experienced great hardship growing up, but they worked hard at school and excelled in their studies.
When they left school the brothers went to the University of Marburg, one of the oldest universities in Germany and this is where they developed their interest in folklore.

A Sample of New Stock
Those of you who are familiar with our shop, Stella & Rose’s Books, know that it sits on the bank of the River Wye in Tintern, separated from the river by the main road running from Chepstow to Monmouth. A beautiful location with views over to the majestic ruins of Tintern Abbey. While the Lower Wye Valley is a popular destination for tourists, how many know of the journey the river takes before arriving at the River Severn beyond Chepstow? This book enlightens us.
Published in 1841, Picturesque Description lives up to it name, not only in the text but also the 12 glorious hand-coloured tipped-in aquatints.
The source of the Wye as described by Fielding rises "amid lofty wilds, and for many miles retains the mountain character..."
