December 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to the December 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope this newsletter find you and your loved ones well. It's been a stormy month here in the UK. Fortunately, despite our location on the river, we've survived the wind and rain. Thankfully, the bad weather has not coincided with any high tides! If you live in the UK, we hope you've been similarly fortunate.

We're sending this newsletter out a little early due to the festive season. Our article and featured book this month include some stunning illustrations; Maria takes a look at the beautiful illustrations of Henriette Willebeek Le Mair whilst Sonia looks at an illustrated book about a Victorian zoological garden!

Whatever your religious persuasion, we hope you enjoy some time off relaxing with family and friends over the Christmas and New Year period. See you in 2025!

Henriette Willebeek Le Mair contributed by Maria

I have recently been pricing up a large collection of Children’s books. In amongst them were two items illustrated by Willebeek Le Mair. I loved the illustrations. Similar to Mabel Lucie Attwell (my favourite illustrator), Henriette seems to be able to capture the beauty and innocence of little children so well in her elegant watercolour illustrations. I decided to do a little research on her and this is what I found.

The Zoological Garden illustrated by Gustav Canton contributed by Sonia

This book is nothing much to look at from the outside – it looks like a typical Victorian cloth covered book. The full title is ‘The Zoological Garden. An Invitation to the Youth of both Sexes to Contemplate Animated Nature.’ You can glean from the title that this is an old book, dating back more than 100 years. The book itself is undated but has a contemporary gift inscription in the front dated 1863, so we will assume it is from around this time.

Upon opening it to the frontispiece and title page… wow! I changed my mind - this is a beautiful book! The frontis shows a lion attacking a crocodile outside its den where the lion’s mate and cubs are...
