Welcome to the April 2025 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
We've enjoyed some lovely warm weather here in the UK over the last few weeks. It seems to have encouraged an early emergence of the Bluebells in the local woods adding a beautiful splash of colour on the morning dog walk! Our photo this month (thanks Alison!) is of the Bluebells in Cadora woods just a few miles up the Wye Valley near Redbrook.
We've all have been working hard to add notes about book contents on to books on the website. This can be especially useful if you remember a particular story from a book - but not the title. For instance, if you search for 'Rupert and the Rugger Match' using the search box at the top of the site, you'll get results for the 1972 and 2013 Rupert Annuals that contain this story. We are also trying to list chapters in books. If you search for 'Locarno Honeymoon' you'll find 'The Royal Air Force: An Encyclopedia...' which contains a chapter on this subject. This is obviously a work in progress - but if you remember a particular story or subject, it's worth searching for it.
Our article this month takes a look at the notorious M25 motorway that encircles London. Lisa looks at the history of this landmark as well as her personal experience of having to drive it on a regular basis. And our featured book is The Silver Tide by Michael Tod. This first book in the Woodstock Saga is based around the introduction of the Grey Squirrel to the UK and the effect it has had on the native Red Squirrel population. Enjoy!

Everyone in the UK has heard of the M25 Motorway and a vast majority of people have travelled on it at some time in their lives.
I have the pleasure (or misfortune) of travelling on it at least a couple of times a month to visit family in Kent. To make this journey from Tintern in Monmouthshire, where I am lucky to live, I take the M4 and then join the M25 at junction 15 near Heathrow Airport...

The Silver Tide is an enchanting story by author Michael Tod. Published in 1993 it is the first book of the Woodstock Saga about the introduction of the grey squirrel into the UK native red squirrel population and the impact this had.
I have a soft spot for animal stories, particularly those like Duncton Wood by William Horwood and Watership Down by Richard Adams, where the animals are portrayed acting like animals. I am less keen on the stories where the animals act like humans – wearing waistcoats, jackets and smoking pipes for example. This book falls into the former category and Tod offers us a fully developed, imagined world in his book. For example, the red squirrels have a folklore that they live by, which is remembered by bits of squirrel wisdom called ‘Kernal’s’. Each kernal works as an arrangement of sounds, five, then seven, then five...
