Welcome to the October 2025 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
Summer is definitely over here in the Wye Valley with the first signs of autumn appearing. Autumn is arguably the most stunning time of the year here as the trees change colour. A drive down the Wye Valley at this time of year is an almost magical experience - especially when the sun is out making the colours even more vibrant. Well recommended - especially when combined with a visit to Stella & Rose's Books!
Meanwhile, in book-related news, we've recently purchased a nice collection of early Beatrix Potter books including a number of deluxe editions. They'll be appearing on our shelves and website over the next few weeks (with one featured below in this newsletter). We've also purchased a collection of Folio Society Books which always look great on the shelf!
We have the second part of our beeswax series this month - looking at the chemistry and uses of beeswax. Our featured book is beautiful book of bedtime stories illustrated by Jessie M. King. Enjoy!

(This is the second part of our Beeswax mini series contributed by Bernice. Part one is here.)
I joined the family bee business about 9 years ago, although I had been helping out for a long time before that. There are many aspects to the job and dealing with the surplus beeswax from the honey extracting is one of them. The filtering, cleaning and re-milling of the wax to go back into the hives I find enjoyable and very satisfying. The wax is a valuable part of the harvest for both beekeepers and the bees. We depend on the bees and they depend on the wax.

Published in 1929, the first thing that strikes me about this book is the wonderful colour pictorial boards in King’s distinctive style.
The title of the book gives away what the book itself is! It is a book of stories designed for bedtime reading to help get the little ones off to sleep. There are 12 short stories all accompanied by pictures which were printed in limited colours but all feature King’s signature elements: angels, fairies, children, lots of flowers and dots.
The stories include 'Peter and Mary', 'The Tiresome Rabbit' and 'Where Babies Come From'. I think my favourite is the last one – Betty asks her Nurse “Where do babies come from”? Nurse replies “You ask the fairies in Dreamland to-night, and perhaps they will take you to see!”.
