  • Mr. Carter's first meeting with Jennings was the routine affair of a busy master who saw in front of him a small boy just like the dozens of other small boys lined up outside his room. So Mr. Carter learnt little from this first meeting. Later he was to learn a lot, for Jennings' arrival at Linbury Court School was going to have breath-taking and sometimes uncomfortable repercussions for both masters and pupils. Well - meaning if somewhat impetuous. Jennings, with his overdeveloped initiative and aided and abetted by that other new boy, the mild, short sighted but erudite Darbishire, has more than a little difficulty in keeping out of trouble.
