  • The hilarious misadventures of Milligan R. are set against the background of a large day school, There is a keen spirit of rivalry between the fourth form at Sheldrake Grammar and the Secondary Tech. and the last day of the holidays is celebrated by a full-scale mock battle with both sides mobilizing a formidable array of armoured soap-boxes on wheels.
  • But that is only the start of the trouble, for a hectic term lies ahead, in which Rex and his friends go into action to raise funds for restoring the roof of the Great Hall. This proves to be no easy task, for it involves the boys in a series of rollicking adventure and misunderstandings. There is the cycle speedway racing on the old bombed site, with danger lurking beneath the surface. There is the famous jumble sale, during which Rex's jacket - complete with Dr. Stallybone's Very Important papers in the pocket - is sold by mistake to a refugee with a secret of his own.
  • The hue-and-cry which follows leads to a lively pursuit in Mr. Frisby's veteran car, "Old Faithful", which shows a turn of speed remarkable in a vehicle of advancing years.
