Contents

  • Loveday, Head Girl of the Chalet School, leaves unexpectedly and Bride Bettany is asked to take over the post. She does so, and finds herself plunged into a series of difficulties, not the least being that the school had taken in a number of pupils from another Chalet School whose Head Mistress has died. The Head's substitute was ultra modern and, under her guidance, the Tanswick School has become a "freak one", where the girls works as and when they please. They find the change to St. Briavel's little to their taste. Diana Skelton, in particular, resents it deeply. Trouble arises between her and the prefects and she is obliged to give in. Blaming Bride for this, she takes her revenge, which recoils on her own head.
  • However after the first shock, Bride shows herself both sympathetic and understanding, and in the end, Diana becomes really penitent and there is every hope that before long she too will settle down as a normal pupil of this Chalet School.
