Contents

  • "I loved the Moss," Mother often said. "I went there as a child ...... met a boy there, a boy named Reuben."
  • Alice had grown up on her mother's stories of this beloved holiday spot near Oxford. When she was fourteen, as war once again threatened Europe, she went there to spend some time at Guelder Rose Farm. Alice too loved the Moss - a kind of damp and boggy moor - with its half sunken Roman road, and a ruined tower where her mother and Reuben used to meet. She wondered about the mystery of Reuben, who had just disappeared, gone without a word. Her mother had never seen nor heard from him again.
  • When Alice met a strange boy at the ruined tower, she thought she was seeing a ghost. But the boy was real, and his name was Reuben! Then, one day the second Reuben did not come to the tower and Alice felt she was in a dream, reliving her mother's experience.
