  • Set on Skua, an island of the West coast of Scotland. The characters include Perdita, the "witch's daughter" who lives on the island: Janey, daughter of a visiting botanist, a child with a handicap; Tim, Janey's brother whose interest in geology leads them into danger; and the mysterious Mr. Smith, and the even more mysterious Mr. Jones. When Tim and his father are searching for a rare orchid, they scramble down a cliff to a cove. Tim pokes around in a cave and comes across a stone which looks like a ruby. On the way home they give a lift to a driver and show him Tim's ruby. He pooh-pooh's the idea of a precious stone but offers to look it up,. Tim refuses and that night his father has a most suspicious accident.
