  • Phyllida Maine, a pupil at a London stage school , knew it was a struggle for her not very successful actor father to pay her school fees. Nevertheless it came as something of a shock when he suddenly announced he was giving up the stage and taking his family to live in the country. He told Phyllida she was leaving the school and could do whatever she wanted as long as she didn't spend her life chasing agents and managers for jobs which don't pay well. He said they would find a house somewhere right off the beaten track and grow vegetables.
  • The little house, the first the Maines had ever owned, was certainly off the beaten track and somehow it led to another 'first house.'
