- Rosemary Langford was born in Singapore where her father had a business. Her mother insisted she be sent to school in England and that she should fly back to Singapore each holiday. One August, just before she was due to fly back to England, Rosemary had to go into hospital for 3 weeks, and a few days later on September 3rd, England declared war on Germany. Rosemary was seventeen years old. Her mother comforted her by saying the war would be over in six months but two years later war was still raging in Europe and the unthinkable happened....... the Japanese invaded Malaya and began their inexorable advance towards Singapore.
