THE DIARY OF SAMUEL PEPYS (11 VOLS)

by Robert Latham; William Matthews; Samuel Pepys

Published by G. Bell & Sons Ltd.. Circa. 1970

Slightly better than very good condition in a very good dustwrapper. Green cloth boards, red title block to spine with gilt titles and vignette to front cover. Top edge green. Eleven volumes. Latham devoted the greater part of his life to the study of the Pepys collection which Pepys had left to Cambridge University. Linnet, his second wife, worked with him during the compilation of the Index and Companion volumes of this definitive edition of The Diary of Samuel Pepys. His work, in collaboration with Professor Willam Matthews, The Diary of Samuel Pepys - A New and Complete Transcription, published by 1970–83, was begun in 1950. This was the first edition in which the entire text was printed including the erotic passages omitted in the edition of 1893-9 by H B Wheatley which could not be published in Victorian times without causing offence.

Volumes 1-7 are reprints. Volumes 8-11 are 1st editions. Some spines are bumped. Name in ink to front endpaper of most volumes. Some top edges have faded to pink. Wrapper have some edge-wear; a little fading to some spines.
