THE MAKING OF COLONIAL LUCKNOW 1856-1877

by Veena Taiwar Oldenburg

Published by Princeton University Press. 1st. 1984

Nearly fine condition in a nearly fine dustwrapper. Examining the history of Lucknow, Oldenburg shows how the results of its transformation after the Mutiny of 1857 continue to pervade the city even today. Challenging conventional views of the extent of British intervention in India after the Mutiny, she contends that the supposedly neutral political, social, economic, and physical changes made in the city at that time constituted aggressive and purposeful control of the population, and that these changes continue to be accepted by contemporary Indian administrators. Lilac cloth boards, blue title block to spine with gilt title.

Neat name in ink to front endpaper. Dustwrapper is slightly browned to spine.
