With a prelude by Richard Wagner. Translated into English by Margaret Armour. 34 beautiful tipped-in colour plates, covered with captioned tissue-guards. Text in a play format. Some wear to spine and corners. Browning to endpapers and outer page edges; a little foxing. Wrapper is worn and scuffed along edges; creased with some tears and chips; a little loss to top of spine. Some marks to wrapper.

Spine and corners slightly bumped with minimal rubbing. Small indentations to cover edges. All plates present, a couple have light corner creases all others are fine. Foxing to contents and some light fingering to page margins.

Spine and corners bumped else a bright copy. Light foxing to outer page edges and light browning to first few and last few pages. White pictorial wrapper is edge chipped, slightly grubby, price-cut and has a 2" closed tear to top edge of front panel.

Dustwrapper is edge torn with tape repairs on verso, loss to top of spine and slightly grubby on rear panel.

Mitford's novel is based largely on the town of Reading in Berkshire where the author lived for a number of years. No half-title in Volume 1 but not sure it was ever present. Final blank leaves present in all three volumes. Spines very slightly faded but overall a handsome set of this rare first edition.
