Welcome to the September 2018 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

Shop News:
The main news this month is the movement of Rose's books across to Tintern!
Rose's Books shop will be closed from Thursday 27th September, and all stock will be transferred to Tintern on Friday 28th September. Stella Books at Tintern will be closed from Friday 28th September to Monday 1st October inclusive while the stock is unpacked. All online orders and enquiries will be processed as normal during this period. We've been busy making room at Stella Books - fingers crossed the big move will go smoothly!
In other news, watch out for our weekly Special Offers on our website (and Twitter etc) offering 20% discount on selected items from our Special Book Room. This week (up to 18th Sept.), there has been 20% discount on Botany books priced £100 or more. Still time to grab a bargain!

It was thirty years ago this month that I exited the Palace Theatre in London with those lyrics reverberating through my head. As many other people have probably done before and since, I immediately resolved to tackle reading Victor Hugo's masterpiece.

Many people are familiar with Maurice Sendak as a children's author and illustrator. This book is written by his father Philip Sendak with illustrations by Maurice. Nearly every story by Maurice Sendak seems to be influenced by his own childhood and the sadness and fragility he felt as a child. He often writes about a child in danger and there is often a “dark” quality to the stories. The Sendak home was not a happy one.

Philip was traumatised by events in his life and by discovering that his extended family left behind in Poland had all died in the Holocaust. Sarah suffered from depression. Their misery and “craziness” filtered down to Sendak and he believed that this led him to become an artist and influenced the type of artist he was...

Circa 1933. Orange boards, pictorial onlay to front cover shows girl playing piano, onlay to spine shows toys in boat. Colour and three tone plates plus b/w text illustrations. Contains short stories and verse.

1st 1904. The Age of Oak, The Age of Walnut, The Age of Mahogany, and The Age of Satinwood. Very large, heavy volumes. 15 colour plates per volume with titled tissue-guard. Numerous b/w illustrations by the author.

1st USA 1915. The first Dickens story Rackham attempted. Despite its ghostliness and opportunities for the supernatural, Rackham did not exploit these to the full. 12 colour plates plus b/w illustrations and decorations. First American edition. All colour plates are present, with captioned tissue-guards.
