A contribution to the mood of patriotism and co-operation between the Allies during WWI, Rackham departs from his usual style in that this book is full of images which thrill and inspire but which do not terrify. Reports coming back from the Front were enough to suggest that this time the Allies could be spared violent images with their family reading at home! Blue cloth, gilt vignette. Introduction by Edmond Gosse. 13 tales. 12 colour plates plus b/w illustrations. 122 pages. 8 x 6". Spine is bumped and quite browned. Damp staining to rear cover, which shows through to around page 119 internally. Heavy foxing to prelims and outer page edges. Some margin marks. All plates present.

One hinge is cracked (stitching holding binding together). Foxing and browning to tissue-guards but plates still bright.

Dustwrapper is in several pieces and has 2" loss to base of spine and other loss at chipped edges, there is foxing and light browning to the remains of the dustwrapper.

A nice copy of the third impression published May 1912.

Peer Gynt is first and foremost a poetic fantasy, although based on a real person who lived Norway c1800. About his exploits, not much more is known than is found in Asbjornsen's book Norwegian Fairy Tales, in which Peer Gynt's chief exploits lie in the direction of fighting and conqueroring trolls. Admirably depicted by the "Goblin Master" in 12 colour plates plus b/w text illustrations. Brown cloth, gilt titles and vignette to front cover. Cream and brown pictorial endpapers. 255 pages.
