Welcome to the August 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
Summer seems finally to have (briefly) arrived in The Wye Valley with a couple of nice weeks of sunshine. Although, as we write this, the weather has become very changeable again. The joys of British weather!
We were delighted to see that a photo taken by our local photographer Chris Bryant, whose photos we often feature in our newsletter, was published this year in the Natural Landscape Photography Awards winners' book. His image is of the sunset on Offa's Dyke, a famous landmark that runs close to Tintern. Congratulations Chris! We have included his photo as our 'Photo of the Month' at the bottom of this newsletter. A celebration of photography is held annually, August 29th is World Photography Day, part of World Photography week (www.worldphotographyday.com)
A few months back we mentioned that we might feature some of our lovely customers who visit the shop. In late July we were delighted to meet Mary-Lou and Jim who visited the shop while on holiday from Chicago. Mary-Lou is a school teacher back home in the US of A and has a big soft spot for Beatrix Potter. She browsed our extensive collection of Beatrix Potter books, including the rarer books in the Special Book Room; but it was the Potter special edition box sets that reduced her to tears - happy tears she assured us. She said it was an incredible experience to see all the Beatrix Potter books together. It was lovely to meet you both, we hope you continue to enjoy (enjoyed?) the rest of your holiday in the UK.

In our article this month, Lisa takes a look at famous English poet William Wordsworth - linked to the area through his travels and poetry. At the other end of the literary spectrum, Alison checks out the 'extremely unpleasant' (but very popular) series of children's books - 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'. Enjoy!
I am extremely lucky where I work, as the view from my desk overlooks Tintern Abbey and the surrounding Wye Valley countryside which is stunning. I was aware of a poem called “A Few Miles above Tintern Abbey” written by William Wordsworth so thought it would be interesting to find out a bit more about it.
William Wordsworth was born in 1770 in the Lake District town of Cockermouth and was the second of five children. Both his parents had died before he was fifteen, so the children were left in the care of different relatives. It was in 1795, when he received a legacy from a close relative, that he and his sister Dorothy moved to Dorset and two years later moved to Somerset...

A Sample of New Stock
It was the name that got me first - ‘Lemony Snicket’. It rolled off the tongue and sounded like a cake or a nice yellow flowered plant. That’s what persuaded me to read the back cover to see what the book was about:
“Dear Reader, I’m sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant, don’t read this, whatever you do. It will sadden you and cause harm to your mind.”
Lemony Snicket was not wrong. The three children the book is about, the Baudelaires, are newly orphaned and go to live with a distant relative who cares nothing for them and sees them as a form of cheap labour and a way to access their parents’ fortune. Not cheery then, and actually pretty cruel in places.
