Welcome to the September 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
As always, we hope this newsletter finds you fit and well. The days are getting shorter - and colder - resulting in some beautiful misty mornings in the Wye Valley. Our photo this month give a flavour of this, capturing Tintern Abbey in the mist.
The Abbey is the venue for lots of interesting events. In October you can enjoy a 'magical night' at the Abbey for the Shadows of Tintern event. There is also the Wings of Wales birds of prey experience on the 21st - 22nd September: 'learn about the history of hawking, and enjoy the birds' majestic flight'.
Elsewhere in the village, there is a 'Meet the Writers' event at the Tintern Village Hall on Saturday 28th September where you can 'join four renowned local authors for readings and Q&A'.
We were pleasantly surprised to see a recent article on NPR extolling the virtues of a good old-fashioned book (over an e-reader) when it comes to bedtime reading. It summarises some interesting recent research that confirms what we've known for a long time: there's no beating a good (paper) book when it comes to bedtime reading!
And finally, don't forget our ongoing sale: we have a 25% sale on older stock items and a 30% sale on all special book room items! Hopefully you can find a gem to read as the evenings close in! Unfortunately, due to red-tape, we are still not shipping to Europe from our website - so European customers will be unable to take advantage of these offers - sorry!
Born on 14th December 1892 in Burma to parents who were methodist missionaries, of the first four years of his life he has no recollection. Having been seriously injured in the upper spine, he and his sister were sent back to the UK in 1897. What had happened remains a mystery to this day. Did they fall from their pony? Fall down the stairs during a game of make-believe? Or was it a more serious event caused by their ‘ayah’ who was responsible for them at the time? Whatever the cause, his parents would not reveal it, and Bestall, although not crippled, was left with partial speech paralysis and a persistent stutter.

A Sample of New Stock
The title of this book intrigued me. What did it mean and what was the book about as the title does not make it clear?
This is the autobiography of Captain Doust who spent most of his working life on the sea. His area of expertise was marine salvage where his engineering skill and his amazing ability to improvise, with whatever equipment was available, under the most difficult of circumstances made him a master of his profession.
He was born in Portsmouth in April 1895 into a strong nautical family background. Both his grandfather and father were Royal Navy engineers, so whatever his career it would be to do with the sea.
