Welcome to the March 2024 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
We mentioned the first high tides of the year in last month's newsletter. Since that newsletter, we've had some even higher tides! For the first time in a couple of years our flood-boards had to actually do their job and keep the water out - which they thankfully did very effectively!
In other shop news, we have just completed the purchase of a large Enid Blyton collection. We're gradually getting the books onto our shelves. Some of the highlights of the collection include complete sets of Secret Seven, Famous Five and Five Find-Outers. We also have a nice collection of railway and bus related books that we're steadily working our way through.
Spring seems to be gradually arriving - our photo of the month is of some spring lambs in front of the derelict Piercefield House near Chepstow. In our articles, Theresa gets into holiday mode with plans for a trip to York; whereas Chris takes a trip back in time to London in 1875 for our featured book. Enjoy!
Is it too early to talk about holidays? – I don’t think it is, it’s how we get through the winter months.
I am off for a short break to Yorkshire in the Spring, York to be precise. York comes from the Viking name for the city, Jorvik and shire comes from an old English or Nordic word.
I have been to York before, but not for many years now, and I am eager to reacquaint myself with all it has to offer or as much as can be accomplished in a weekend.
I am looking forward to visiting York Minster, which if I remember rightly on my last visit was covered in scaffolding, so this time I will be able to see it in all its glory, especially the Rose Window.

Or… Herbert’s Guide To London, Being a Guide to Hotels, Places of Amusement, Objects of Interest, Parks, Clubs, Markets, Docks, Railway and Steamship Routes. In fact, anything you could wish to know about the London of almost 150 years ago appears to be in this Guide!
Books like this have always fascinated me. Despite the fact that I hated history lessons at school, I find that I’m drawn to books that describe what life was like in the past. This particular book is beautifully presented – unusually so for a directory, which are usually dull affairs. Not so this one, as every page is embellished with a beautiful gold and purple border and scattered throughout the book are full-page black and white engravings of various monuments and buildings to be seen in London.
